"Al-Gharb"     -       The West

The Arabic name given by the Moors to this province, Portugal 's southernmost,

but the name is not the only thing which reminds us of the times under the rule of the Arabs.

Many of the old white villages, with Moorish chimneys on top of their houses,

are shining in the sunlight like a vision out of "A Thousand-and-one-Nights".

The golden beaches of the Algarve with their bizarre rock formations -

the crystal clear water, the many small creeks, are parts of a landscape

of great beauty, unsurpassed in Europe .
